Marco Minnemann | Biography

German native, Marco Minnemann is looked upon by his peers as one of the most gifted, innovative, cutting-edge drummers on the international music scene today. He has won numerous awards for his educational drum books and videos and was recently featured on the cover of the World’s #1 Drum Magazine, Modern Drummer.
Minnemann’s unusual drum kit set up, which includes an array of multiple foot pedals, Gong drum, electronics and unique cymbal configurations, combined with his amazing, extreme interdependence skills has propelled him to superstar status among today’s elite drumming royalty. His total command of four-way independence is unequaled, and his over-the-top drumming creations are simply mind-boggling. He is a total drumming Super-Freak!

Marco’s “Extreme Interdependence” drum instructional book was voted the #1 educational book in several drumming magazines. His “Extreme Drumming” DVD also won several Readers Poll awards and earned Marco the prestigious Telly Award.

Not only is Minnemann a world-class drumming innovator, having brought stunned audiences to their feet at most every major drum festival in the world, but he is also a musical Renaissance man. His eclectic musical skills include composing, producing, and engineering, as well as being a multi-instrumentalist on guitar, bass, keyboards, and vocals. Minnemann has seven multi-faceted solo recordings to his name, along with several outstanding recordings with his former band, Illegal Aliens, and numerous recordings as a sideman and producer, working with such artists as Paul Gilbert (Mr. Big), Mike Keneally (Frank Zappa) and European superstar, Nina Hagen.

In 2006, Minnemann was invited to perform on a rare world clinic tour with legendary drummer Terry Bozzio (Frank Zappa, Missing Persons, Brecker Bros.) and drumming great, Chad Wackerman (Frank Zappa, Allan Holdsworth). His top-selling instructional book, “Maximum Minnemann” was recently voted in the Top Five Best Educational Books in the Modern Drummer 2007 Readers Poll and his most recent DVD, The Marco Show (DW DVD) features riveting performances with artists Mike Keneally (guitar), Bryan Beller (bass) and the legendary Buddy Rich Big Band.

Marco Minnemann continues to redefine drumming and solidify his place in music history with a truly unique voice, and an undisputed talent, as one of the greatest drummers and innovative composers the world has ever witnessed.

Minnemann moved to the States and currently resides in San Diego, CA. In April 2007 Marco joined the German metal band, Necrophagist who will headline the 2007 Summer Slaughter tour. He is scheduled to record Necrophagist’s new album set for 2008 release.

Marco Minnemann proudly endorses DW Drums and Hardware, Zildjian Cymbals, Evans Drumheads, ProMark Drumsticks, Audix Microphones, and Roland Electronic Percussion.

Marco Minnemann started playing organ at the age of 6, and then switched to drums and guitar at the same time at the age of 11. Marco’s fame as one of the extraordinarily talented drummers and composers, reached him at the age of 19 all the way to Munich. The first ‘cross-over’ band “Freaky Fukin’ Weirdoz” offered him a position as drummer in 1992, in connection with a major deal with BMG-Ariola. The “Weirdoz” were the originators of so-called ‘cross-over’ music which today, various bands unjustifiably claim as their own.

The “Weirdoz” had a gig with European cult diva, Nina Hagen on the album “Mao Mak Maa” where a fantastic cover version of Ian Dury’s hit “Hit Me with Your Rhythm Stick” was created. Marco was immediately booked to play the following Nina Hagen tour. The successful collaboration with the “Weirdoz” ended in 1997 after Marco’s having worked together on four albums: “Senseless Wonder”, “Mao Mak Maa”, Culture Shock” and “Hula”.

Almost simultaneously, an engagement with the Top Ten ‘cross-over’ band “H-Blockx” came up on the album “Fly Eyes”. During 1997-1999, they played over 200 gigs together. Meanwhile, Marco’s reputation as a talented drummer reached out worldwide. Prominent were solo workshops, for example, at the Frankfurt Music Fair, PASIC in Dallas, and a solo performance at the prestigious “Modern Drummer Festival” where Marco had the honor of being the first German drummer to perform at this high-profile event. This performance, in the eyes of professionals and music trade magazines, catapulted him into the Top Ten of the drumming world. Following the Modern Drummer Festival were the Australian TUDW ‘fest and the Montreal Drum festival in Canada.

While working with the “Weirdoz”, Marco also produced four albums with his own band “Illegal Aliens”, which included “Thickness”, “Red Alibis”, “Time” and “International Telephone”. Since then, Marco has recorded six solo albums: “The Green Mindbomb” “Comfortably Homeless”, “Orchids”, “Broken Orange”, “Mieze” and the 2CD set “Contraire de la chanson”, which are more on par with his talents as a multi-instrumentalist, composer and producer. “Motor” and “Normalizer” came out in 2003 in collaboration with the sound designer, Mario Brinkmann, and “Disarmed” along with Italian Bass Player, Fabio Trentini followed in 2005.

Moreover, Marco followed his passion for Jazz and Funk by playing with the “Wolfgang Schmid’s Kick” band. Schmid was ex-bassist in Dolinger’s “Passport” and composer of numerous film soundtracks.

Marco also co-produced and played instruments on Paddy Kellys (Kelly family) solo CD, which entered the charts in 2004. He also played on the double-platinum CD “Nena feat. Nena.” Marco has performed and recorded with such varied artists as: Paul Gilbert, Nena, Udo Lindenberg, H-Blockx, Mike Keneally, FFW, Gianna Nannini, Garry Willis, The Kelly Family and many more.

New drummer Dreamtheater

Blabbermouth is reporting that Dream Theater have likely found a replacement for drummer and founding member Mike Portnoy. Though no official statement has been made, it is “strongly rumored” that the band has settled on world-class session drummer Marco Minnemann.
The German-born Minnemann has produced several highly acclaimed solo albums, as well as an award-winning collection of instructional books and DVDs. He has worked with a variety of artists, including Kreator, Paul Gilbert and Necrophagist.
There is no indication if or when Dream Theater will make an official announcement, but guitarist John Petrucci posted on the band’s website:
“Auditions went great and we do have someone, but we are spending some time getting everything in order before making an official announcement. Let me just say that we are all incredibly excited about our choice and just bursting at the seams to let the world know!”

Free Mike Portnoy Tribute Album

Independent musicians, graphic
artists, and a computer graphics demogroup have collaborated on a grand scale multimedia tribute to Mike Portnoy,
in celebration of over a quarter of a century of highly influential musicianship. Mike Portnoy’s early investment into
the internet, as well as his relationship with the global fan
base, created a fad-transcending musical community that
continues to grow past the post quarter century mark.
Mike Portnoy has always possessed a strong commitment
to bringing a diverse lineup of “under the radar” support
bands on the road.  These tours introduced hundreds of
thousands to some truly genre-defining music, and inspired a new generation with music that would have otherwise remained outside the public
view.  “Mike, over the years, has fueled an online community with tireless energy and effort,
of which it has been a pleasure to be a part of.  Members of the community feel that paying
some of that energy forward is the least they could do to show their appreciation,” says
compilation producer Anthony Morse.
The multimedia tribute appears in the form of a free three disc digital album, interviews,
and some stunning music videos graphically generated by the legendary Greek demogroup
Andromeda Software Development.
Honor Thy Drummer: A Tribute to Mike Portnoy contains 3 digital discs, 2 new, and a bonus
2009 retrospective disc featuring choice selections from the previous digital release MPF
2009.  Honor Thy Drummer features a diverse range of styles and approaches, drawing inspiration from Mr. Portnoy’s award winning approach to music, created by acts inspired by
his musical influence. The resulting music seamlessly crosses many musical boundaries
weaving from heavy time-spanning progressive metal to concise folk.
The Honor Thy Drummer multimedia collection is available for free download at
http://www.spaceprog.com. It contains the digital album in MP3 format, a digital PDF
booklet featuring photos, lyrics, and bios of the contributing artists. Two of three interviews
with contributing artists Relocator, In Progress, and S.A. Adams, are included, and shed
light on their collaborations with progressive metal superstars Derek Sherinian, Mark
Zonder, and Mike Portnoy himself, all of whom play on the artists‘ tracks featured in Honor
Thy Drummer. The third interview will be released in January.
The scope of this endeavor reaches across the United Kingdom, Europe, Australia, and
the American continent. This project, fueled by the hard work and dedication of all of the
participants, resulted in a quality work free to the world, and without the complications
of revenue generation. The collection is, simply put, a high quality independent project
available freely to all that desire the audio/visual experience.

Winter in Eden

Winter In Eden

Winter in Eden

Symphonic Rock

In the beginning was created the Heaven and the Earth, and the Earth was without form, and void; and Darkness was upon the face of the deep. And Man was formed from the dust of the ground, and became a living soul;
and a garden was planted, eastward, in Eden.

And out of the ground grew every tree that is pleasant to the sight, and good for food; the Tree of Life also in the midst of the garden, and the Tree of the Knowledge of Good and Evil.
And watching from on high, surveying the joyous scene, stands Lucifer, The Morning Star.
First-born Arch-angel, loved once above all others. Now fallen, through pride, and malice.
And he approaches Eve, the Mother of Mankind, masquerading as the wily serpent.
And of the forbidden fruit she eats…………………… and knows.

Music

“Her rash hand in evil hour forth-reaching to the fruit, she plucked, she ate; Earth felt the wound, and Nature from her seat, sighing through all her works, gave signs of woe that all was lost.”
And the Man ate of the fruit, and they knew the Knowledge of Good and Evil. And they were as Gods.
And their God knew of these things, and he drove them from the Garden.
And Darkness was upon the face of the deep.
And there was Winter in Eden.

Ancient Bards

Sara Squadrani - vocals
Fabio Balducci - guitars
Daniele Mazza - keyboards
Claudio Pietronik - guitars
Martino Garattoni - Bass
Allesandro Carichini - drums
The Ancient Bards project takes its origin in the january of 2006 from the mind of the keyboards player Daniele Mazza, whose intent was to create a metal band with epic and symphonic sounds. After the meeting with the bass player Martino Garattoni the project began to materialize.
Initially the line up was not stable beacuse of several problems, but in the summer of 2007, after a period of inactivity, the band found it’s final line up with Sara as singer, Claudio as solo guitarist, Fabio as rythm guitarist and Alessandro as drummer.
The sextet imediately started working on the demo ep “Trailer” containing four excerpts of the exciting Black Crystal Sword Saga conceived by Daniele himselfthat is influenced from fantasy nordic tales and japanese stories like Final Fantasy.
During the realization of the demo, the bards were also busy performing in several Italian live contests from which they gained great results always reaching the first place.
In May 2008 Trailer was finished and was reviewed by many italian webzines and magazines always obtaining high marks. In the meantime they were noticed by Emiliano Nanni, the president of the promotion and booking agency BRC (Bologna Rock City), that brought them on the stages on many italian live clubs supporting bands such as Turisas, Over The Rainbow, Almah, White Skull, etc. getting loads of success.

In the summer of 2009 the band recorded at Fear Studio in Ravenna it’s first full-length album that merges Sara Squadrani’s vocals with clean choral singalongs and heavy guitar sounds, to create an album teeming with ultra-catchy gems.
Up to now the path of the six bards has led them to sign with Limb Music Products
(Rhapsody, Luca Turilli, Pagan’s Mind, Eldritch and many more).

The rest of the Ancient Bards’ adventure is still to be written…

Avenged sevenfold & Mike Portnoy

AVENGED SEVENFOLD manager Larry Jacobson has told LA Weekly's "West Coast Sound" blog that there is no correlation between drummer Mike Portnoy's departure from the band and the cancelation of the group's participation in the Australian Soundwave festival. He writes, "The plan had always been for Mike Portnoy to play with the band through 2010. Nothing changed there but it was confusing [because] Mike gave interviews suggesting he may be touring with the band beyond 2010. There will be another drummer behind the kit for the band's 'Nightmare After Christmas' tour [in January/February] as well as for the many other dates around the world that are underway into 2011 and beyond. As for Australia, the timing is completely unrelated. If you've read any of the juvenile and public attacks by the [Soundwave] promoter, you can probably figure out why the band had legitimate doubts they could work with him to be able to put on the professional show their fans expect. They're not in Australia every day so each tour needs to be the best the band has to offer."

AVENGED SEVENFOLD issued a statement yesterday explaining that "we know we are not ready to add another permanent member of AVENGED SEVENFOLD [following last year's passing of drummer Jimmy 'The Rev' Sullivan]. We don't know if we will ever be. But if we do, it will only be with someone who is not only a brilliant drummer, but also someone we've gotten to know well on the road and off, and who you the fans have had a chance to get to know, and hopefully accept. In other words, in this family, we take these steps together, band and our extended fan family."

The group added, "Mike and the band agree that can't be him. Why? Long before there was an AVENGED SEVENFOLD, there were members of this band who looked up to Mike and, in Jimmy's case, learned a lot from watching Mike play. He is a brilliant writer, producer and, of course, drummer. Because of that, the world and we would always see it as AVENGED SEVENFOLD with Mike Portnoy."

AVENGED SEVENFOLD is slated to hit the road in the U.S. next month as part of the "Nightmare After Christmas" tour, along with STONE SOUR and HOLLYWOOD UNDEAD.

James Sullivan, AVENGED SEVENFOLD's founding drummer, was found dead in his California home last December 28 of a fatal mixture of drugs and alcohol.

Written on Avenged sevenfold's website:

For the past few months, we've been blessed with Mike Portnoy's talent and humanity. When Mike agreed to tour with us, it was only through the end of 2010. We always knew we'd need to find another solution for 2011 and beyond. And it's time for us to take that next step.
We know we are not ready to add another permanent member of Avenged Sevenfold. We don't know if we will ever be. But if we do, it will only be with someone who is not only a brilliant drummer, but also someone we've gotten to know well on the road and off, and who you the fans have had a chance to get to know, and hopefully accept. In other words, in this family, we take these steps together, band and our extended fan family.
We are lucky to be surrounded by so many friends, many of whom knew Jimmy very well personally, as well as our band and Jimmy's drumming talent and style. These friends have introduced us to several amazing drummers. We have decided to take one of them out starting in January. He will not be a member of a7x. He will be someone you and we are getting to know. Perhaps this drummer will be a fit. Perhaps not. One thing is for sure. Over time we will find someone who helps us continue our quest to make the music we love for the fans we love.
Mike and the band agree that can't be him. Why? Long before there was an Avenged Sevenfold, there were members of this band who looked up to Mike and, in Jimmy's case, learned a lot from watching Mike play. He is a brilliant writer, producer and of course drummer. Because of that, the world and we would always see it as Avenged Sevenfold with Mike Portnoy. We take a lot of pride in A7X being about something greater then any individuals. Its about the music, the fans and the friends and family we have as well as continuing our best friends legacy.
Please give whoever we try your love and support....and the benefit of the doubt. They won't be Jimmy. Who could be? But he will be himself, with his own special talents and creativity. And that's all we could ever look for.
Thank you again from the bottom of our hearts for everything you've done to love and support us.
A7X
